This corresponds to the full teacher role and is the equivalent of the CertEd or PGCE. The qualification can lead to Qualified Teacher in the Learning and Skills (QTLS) status once combined with continuing professional development and a period of professional formation. It is a Level 5 award with 120 credits. The Diploma comprises Part 1 and Part 2 and there is a requirement for 150 hours of teaching. There are 7 mandatory units (PTLLS is Unit 1) and 2 optional units. This course is achievable over 1 year full time study or 2/3 years part time study.

This qualification is open to all in-service, pre-service and pre-employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning sector, or suitably qualified people who wish to enter the profession. The Diploma is designed for those who are able to undertake a full teaching role having responsibility for learners throughout the learning process and engaging in teaching on a range of academic levels within their subject specialism.

Full Award trainees would be expected to use resources they have designed and evaluated, deliver learning across a range of levels, subjects and learner types, and contribute to a range of programmes of varying lengths.

Course Structure

The qualification comprises the following study and activities:

•    An initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and commencement of the Professional Development Portfolio
•    Completion of the threshold award Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
•    Aligning teaching, learning and assessment
•    Teaching and reflecting on own practice; including 75 hours of teaching practice/placement within a subject specialism and four hours of observed practice
•    Action research
•    Professional values and inclusive practice

Pre-requisites to join

•    A Level 3 qualification in your own subject specialism
•    An appropriate level of education (five GCSEs at grade C, including English)
•    Potential to complete 150 hours of teaching, which may be voluntary over the course of the programme
•    Successful interview
