Introduction

This qualification is aimed at all in-service, pre-service and pre-employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning sector or suitably qualified people who wish to enter the profession. This award is designed for those who will undertake an Associate Teacher Role, which carries fewer teaching responsibilities than the full role. The quality of teaching is expected to be of an equally high standard. This is a Level 4 qualification with 24 credits. The Certificate comprises 3 mandatory units (of which PTTLS is Unit 1) and an optional unit. There is a minimum requirement of 30 hours of teaching practice. Credits from CTTLS can be carried into the Diploma.

Course Structure

After an initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT skills, the tutor guides the learners towards commencement of the Professional Development Portfolio. The course flows in the form of classroom teaching and workshops to understand the expectations from the learners. Learners are given examples of how they can meet the standards and thereby achieve the qualification. They would be observerd for 3 hours of teaching practice.

Pre-requisites to join

1. You must have completed your threshold award ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

2. You should be employed as a teacher or may be doing voluntary teaching for at least 30 hours over the course of the CTLLS course

3. You should hold a Level 3 qualification in your own subject specialism


4. You should have an appropriate level of education including English, Maths and ICT


5. You will have to undergo an interview with the course tutor
